How Big is 14 Square Meters? Hotel Room Photos, Unit Conversions, and Layout Guide

ホテルニューマーブル シングル 14平米

In this article, we will explain the actual size of 14 square meters (approx. 150 square feet). We have included reference photos of hotel rooms, conversions to Japanese units like “Tsubo” and “Jo,” and typical floor plan details. This guide is helpful when staying at a hotel in Japan or looking for an apartment or condo to rent.

In Japan, the term “Heibei” is used interchangeably with “area” or “square meters,” and the standard unit is “㎡.”

A 14-square-meter space is approximately 3.74 meters by 3.74 meters (about 12.3 feet by 12.3 feet). If a single-story building were a perfect square of this size, its frontage would be about 3.74 meters (12.3 feet).

While square meters are the standard for lodging and real estate, Japan also uses unique traditional units called “Tsubo” and “Jo” (or “Tatami”), which are very common. We have included the conversions for 14 square meters into these units below.

In terms of accommodations, 14 square meters is considered small; you will almost never see rooms this size at resort hotels. In the context of housing, this equates to a “One Room” (studio) layout. While it is perfectly fine for a one-night stay, it can feel quite cramped and inconvenient for long-term living.

Let’s take a closer look at 14 square meters. We have also compiled photos of other sizes and guides for “Jo” and “Tsubo” units, so please feel free to check them out.

14 Square Meters: Dimensions and Conversion to Tsubo/Jo

To help you visualize 14 square meters, the table below shows the dimensions of the space as a square (length x width), conversions to “Tsubo” and “Jo” (commonly used to describe room size in Japan), and typical layout expectations.

Regarding “Jo,” the standard size of a tatami mat varies by region. Here, we calculate based on the real estate standard of 1 Jo = 1.62㎡. For more details, please see “Explaining Tatami Sizes: Kyoma, Edoma, and More.”

It is small, but compared to the very tight feel of 10 square meters, there is a bit more breathing room. In newer buildings, it shouldn’t feel too claustrophobic. It is perfectly adequate for a business trip stay. Photos taken in December 2014.

Living here long-term in a house or rental apartment would be quite cramped, but for a one-night stay in a business hotel, it is completely fine. Photos taken in August 2016.
