シングルルーム

We will explain how large 9 square meters is, along with reference photos of hotel rooms, conversions into tsubo and tatami (jo), and an overview of typical layouts. Use this as a reference when staying in hotels in Japan or when renting apartments and other housing.

Square meters (㎡) is a unit that means “area” or “square meters.”

9 square meters is approximately a 3.00 m × 3.00 m space (3.00 meters by 3.00 meters). If the building were a single-story square structure, the frontage would be about 3.00 meters. In feet, this is roughly 9.84 ft × 9.84 ft.

In Japan, square meters are called “heibei” (平米) and are commonly used for accommodations and rental housing. In addition, there are traditional Japanese units such as “tsubo” and “jo (tatami),” which are also frequently used.

We have also included conversions showing how many tsubo and tatami (jo) 9 square meters equals.

Note that “帖 (jo)” and “畳 (tatami)” have the same reading and meaning. When used with a number, such as “1畳,” it is read as “ichijo,” but when used alone, it is read as “tatami.”

At 9 square meters, this is a very small hotel room and is rarely seen in rental properties due to its limited size. Even for one person it can feel cramped, and for two people it would require staying very close together.

Now let’s take a closer look at 9 square meters. We have also compiled photos of other sizes and reference values for tatami (jo) and tsubo, so please check those as well.
