How Big is 6 Square Meters? Hotel Photos, Conversions to Tsubo/Jo, and Layout Guide
How spacious is 6 square meters (approx. 64.6 square feet)? We’ll explain the size with reference photos of hotel rooms, conversions to Japanese units like “Tsubo” and “Jo,” and typical layouts. Please use this as a guide when staying at hotels in Japan or looking for rental apartments.
In Japan, the term “Heibei” (平米) means “area” or “square meters,” and the unit is “㎡.”
6 square meters is roughly a space of 2.45m x 2.45m (approx. 8ft x 8ft). If a one-story building were a perfect square, the frontage would be approximately 2.45 meters (8 feet).
While square meters (Heibei) are the standard unit for housing and hotels in Japan, traditional Japanese units called “Tsubo” (坪) and “Jo” (帖) or “Tatami” (畳) are also very commonly used.
We have also included conversions for how many Tsubo and Jo make up 6 square meters for your reference.
Note: “Jo” (帖) and “Tatami” (畳) have the same pronunciation and meaning. However, “畳” is read as “Jo” when preceded by a number (e.g., 1-jo) and read as “Tatami” when used on its own without a number.
A 6-square-meter room is considered very small for a hotel. These rooms often lack a private bath or toilet, or at best, feature a very cramped “unit bath” (compact prefabricated bathroom). This size is almost never seen in the rental market for housing, as it is quite difficult to live in such a limited space.
Let’s take a closer look at 6 square meters. We have also compiled photos of other sizes and guides for “Jo (Tatami)” and “Tsubo” measurements, so please feel free to check them out as well.

Regarding “Jo,” the size of a tatami mat varies by region. For these calculations, we use the real estate standard of 1 Jo = 1.62㎡. For more details, please see: “Explanation of Tatami Sizes: Kyoma, Edoma, and More.”
Photos of 6 Square Meters
To see what 6 square meters actually looks like, here are photos taken in an actual Japanese hotel and inn (Ryokan).
Business Hotel Lucky

This hotel is located in the Nishinari area of Osaka. As you can see, it is quite small and does not have a private bath or toilet in the room (separate shared shower rooms and toilets are available). While we did not measure it precisely, it felt slightly smaller than 6 square meters. These photos were taken in May 2018.
